Meet Our Teachers

Judith Lockwood-Urban. FNATD Examiner, IDTA, CDET, ADFP.
I originally trained in Manchester before heading off to work as a professional dancer alongside many well known National and International stars. I have performed in various venues of The West End of London, Germany and have toured England. When residing in Germany I first found my passion for teaching, so when I moved back to England in 1987 I gained the NATD teaching qualifications required to teach in the UK. In 1991 I opened my own school in Penzance. At the time I only had a small handful of pupils, I'm very proud that over the years my school has grown to a much larger number and we now teach 200 pupils a week.
In 2003 my reputation, dedication and hard work was recognised when I was invited to become an Examiner for the NATD. This job has enabled me to examine students from the UK as well as abroad, this has included Canada, Malaysia twice and Majorca.
In 2004 I qualified as an IDTA teacher, we now offer classes from both the NATD and IDTA syllabi.

Emaly Bettany-Fund. ANATD, FHT (Sports Massage), REPS accredited level 2 gym instructor, Level 2 safeguarding.
I'm Emaly born and bred in Cornwall - I started dancing when I was 12 years old with Judith Lockwood-Urban and have progressed to do my associate in Freestyle very recently in 2015. I am now at advanced 1 level in ballet, tap and modern and will be working towards my associates in all three in the very near future. I have just completed a year with Marjon university in Plymouth where I have studied and trained in both gym instruction and sports massage. Both of which I feel will aid my teaching ability at Lockwood-Urban. |
Elaine Jones. DipLCM- Musical Theatre. LCM Drama and Communications, Popular Music.
Hi, I'm Elaine Jones. I have two daughters that have both studied dance and drama with Lockwood Urban from a very young age. Watching their success, I was inspired to become a part of the school and began my studies with The London College of Music, in order to teach Musical Theatre. My class involves vocal coaching, stagecraft, musical drama, theatre historical knowledge and lots of laughter. I aim to inspire my students and help them gain confidence to help with future life skills. |
Karen Nicholas. ANATD, RAD, DDMIX instructor, Level 2 Safeguarding
My passion for dance and fitness spans over 30 years. I was fortunate enough to have the very best training from a young age as I was accepted as a junior associate of the Birmingham Royal Ballet. I was able to attend lots of Royal Academy of Dance residentials and have performed with both the Northern Ballet and London Festival Ballet which is now known as the English National Ballet. Unfortunately the promise of a professional dance career was abruptly halted due to illness, which over the past ten years has significantly improved. I strongly believe this is due to getting back in to dance, fitness and having a general awareness of my own health and well-being. The positive outcomes are something I feel is paramount to everyone and something I advocate during all classes. |
Kimberley Nicholls. ANATD, Tapfit instructor, PGCE Primary, EYPS, BA Hons, Level 3 safeguarding.
I began dancing with Judith at the very young age of 3 and have been at the school since the very beginning. I gained my teaching qualification back in 2009 just after I graduated from University and now teach at the school most days. As well as teaching at Lockwood-Urban I now provide dance and drama lessons in local primary schools, as well as part of the Acorn Young People's Theatre and The Minack Youth Theatre. You may also see me during school holidays at the Minack Theatre where I like to spend my 'spare time' working. Being a part of Lockwood-Urban has provided me with opportunities that I wouldn't have gained elsewhere. I have danced on various stages of the West End in London, at Disneyland in Paris and have had the opportunity to choreograph pieces which have also appeared on these stages. All experiences that I am extremely grateful for. |
