Ballet including Pointe work*-
Ballet is the most famous and longest running form of dance. The dancer is required to show self-discipline and control when executing each movement. We follow the NATD syllabus where our dancers will learn the foundations of ballet at a young age and will progress to learn the graceful technique that is Pointe work. The correct French terminology is learned and the dancer is empowered to develop the confidence and knowledge of the syllabus, in order to create their own choreography.
Lessons for students under the age of 10 are generally on a Saturday with older students including adults during the week. Graded exam lessons are billed on a termly basis.

Tap*
Tap dance is a form of dance characterised by using the sounds of tap shoes striking the floor as a form of percussion. Two major variations on tap dance exist: rhythm (jazz) tap and Broadway tap. Broadway tap focuses on dance; it is widely performed in musical theatre. Rhythm tap focuses on musicality , and practitioners consider themselves to be a part of the Jazz tradition. The sound is made by shoes that have a metal "tap" on the heel and toe.
At Lockwood-Urban we follow the NATD Stage Branch Tap Syllabus which studies the Broadway Tap style. We do however provide opportunities to attend workshops in Rhythm tap (Most recently with Matt Flint, So you think you can dance and Graeme Henderson, Tap Attack) and encourage our students to experiment with different rhythms during class times.
Our students learn tap from age 2 when they start right up through the grades to an adult leisure class. Classes for under 10's are run on a Saturday morning and for older students including adults during the week.
.
Modern*
Modern dance is a broad genre of theatrical dancing. It is generally seen in Musical Theatre productions but can be a study of various different styles of dance. Modern dance can incorporate aspects of Ballet, Contemporary, Lyrical, Musical Theatre as well as traditional Ballroom styles such as Salsa, Charleston, Jive, Rock n Roll etc. Modern is a challenging but fun style that keeps the dancer on their toes when learning the variations of style.
Our students learn Modern from age 2 when they start, right up through the grades to vocational level and beyond. Classes for under 10's are run on a Saturday morning and for older students during the week.

Contemporary*-
Contemporary dance is a style of expressive dance that combines elements of several dance genres. Contemporary dancers strive to connect the mind and the body through fluid dance movements. Contemporary dance stresses versatility and improvisation, unlike the strict, structured nature of ballet. Contemporary dancers focus on floor work, using gravity to pull them down to the floor. This dance genre is often done in bare feet. Contemporary dance can be performed to many different styles of music.
Contemporary classes work from the NATD Contemporary syllabus, This syllabus is based on the work of Contemporary dance pioneers such as Martha Graham, Merce Cunningham and Jose Limon. These contemporary dancers all believed that dancers should have freedom of movement, allowing their bodies to freely express their innermost feelings.
Exams can be taken from Grade 1 at aged 8 right up to vocational level where UCAS points can be gained. Perfect for students wishing to progress to performing arts colleges and beyond.

Street
Street is an umbrella term which encompasses a range of dance styles characterised by descriptions such as hip hop, funk and breakdancing. Its eclectic nature has spawned a whole new street dance-lexicon, including terms such as popping, locking, waving and krumping. Street classes at Lockwood-Urban are open to all ages and abilities from 4 up to and including adults and are designed to be enjoyed by all attending regardless of any previous experience. |

Lyrical
Lyrical dance is a fusion of ballet and jazz techniques. Lyrical challenges the choreographers and dancers to use emotion to portray a story through the lyrics or melody of a song. Lyrical has a more elegant balletic feel to it and tells the story through every movement made. Choreography is often emotional, gripping, and exquisitely delicate all at the same time.
Lyrical dances at Lockwood-Urban appear in our annual shows, there is also an opportunity to take exams as an award.

Tapfit
Tapfit is an all over body workout! TAPfit is performed while dancing on the toes of your feet with relaxed knees, taking pressure off your lower back and instead activating your quadriceps. This natural weight helps shape your buttocks and legs while the TAPfit steps will result in increased muscle power and increased calorie burn.
An ideal way to tone, improve core strength and lose weight while having mountains of fun.
Perfect for complete beginners and experienced dancers. No Tap shoes required as the beauty of the session is that there are attachments that go over your normal running shoes and will provide more support for your feet and ankles than a tap shoe.
